Viral song of the summer goes unnoticed by the overwhelming majority of the world
It was the fourth song we ever wrote, or so the story goes. It’s too long ago now to remember the actual order. But just like all good things it came to be in a basement in 2013. Nathan had been flirting with a banjo for quite some time, and Jake was burgeoning into his falsetto. The stars had aligned for the two of these up-and-coming songwriters to give the stomp-clap genre a run for its money. Like an illicit substance, quasi-folk music can take you to some very unforgiving places. If you weren’t careful in the 2010’s,
you could easily find yourself changed by an Apple commercial, or worse yet, base your identity on a deeply moving, but woefully two-dimensional, coming-of-age movie. Thankfully for us, we missed those exits on the freeway to superstardom and carried straight on through to slightly-left-of-center-indie-folk-rock, a much less addictive and, some argue, medically beneficial substance.
